HTML5 Introduction
HTML5 is the fifth major version of HTML. It became an official W3C recommendation in 2014, and it is what we use today. It made the web richer, because many things that needed plugins like Flash can now be done with plain HTML.
What is new in HTML5
| Feature | Example |
|---|---|
| Simple doctype and charset | <!DOCTYPE html>, <meta charset="UTF-8"> |
| Semantic elements | header, nav, main, article, section, footer |
| Audio and video | <audio>, <video> |
| Graphics | <canvas> and inline <svg> |
| New form input types | email, number, date, color, range |
| Form attributes | placeholder, required, pattern, autofocus |
| Web storage | localStorage and sessionStorage in JavaScript |
| Other APIs | Geolocation, drag and drop, offline support |
Tags removed from HTML5
Some old tags are not valid in HTML5. Do the job with CSS instead.
| Removed tag | Use instead |
|---|---|
<font> | CSS font-family, color, font-size |
<center> | CSS text-align: center |
<big>, <strike>, <tt> | CSS, or <del> and <code> |
<frame>, <frameset> | <iframe> and CSS layout |
Is there HTML6?
No. HTML is now a “living standard” kept by WHATWG, and browsers add small improvements all the time. We just say HTML or HTML5.
