SEO – Search Intent

Search intent is the reason behind a search. It is what the person really wants when they type something. A page can only rank well when it gives the thing which the searcher is looking for, so intent is as important as the keyword itself.

Four types of search intent

IntentThe person wants toExample searchesBest page type

How to find the intent of a keyword

  1. Search the keyword in Google yourself.
  2. Look at the first page. Are the results guides, product pages, videos or maps?
  3. Read the titles and boxes: “People also ask”, videos, shopping, local map. They tell what Google thinks the user wants.
  4. Make your page the same type as the pages which are ranking.

Example

Search for “python tutorial” and you will see mostly guides and courses. A product page that sells a Python book will not match that intent. But for “buy python book”, a product page is the right thing.

Match your content with the intent

  • Informational: give a clear answer early, then details, examples and next steps.
  • Commercial: compare options, list pros and cons, and be honest.
  • Transactional: make the buying step easy, show price, details and trust signs.
  • Navigational: make sure your brand page is easy to find and the address is correct.

One keyword can have more than one intent

Some searches are mixed. “iphone 15” can be news, review or shopping. In that case look at what Google shows in the first results, and choose one clear purpose for your page.

Note: If your page gets impressions but few clicks, or users leave quickly, one reason can be a wrong intent. Check the real search results again. Next: Domain Names.
